A sea of Remembrance Crosses with scarlet poppies continues to grows in the grounds of Westminster Abbey on the eve of Remembrance Day.
The Field of Remembrance pays tribute to all the brave Service men and women who have served in our Armed Forces since World War I. The Field of Remembrance at Westminster Abbey was officially opened by HRH The Duke of Edinburgh on Thursday 11 November at 11.00am.
The 2011 Poppy Appeal was launched on Thursday 27 October and is the culmination of the 90th anniversary year. A record breaking total of £36 million was raised in 2010 and the target this year is to fund raise £40 million.
Armistice Day, also known as Remembrance Day, marked on 11 November since 1928, commemorates the armistice signed between the Allies of World War I and Germany at Compiegne, France, for the cessation of hostilities on the Western Front of World War I, which took effect at eleven o'clock in the morning, on the 'eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month' of 1918.
